I’m working with AF Supply, a supplier of luxury bathroom and spa fixtures with a magnificent showroom in Essex County, NJ – in Fairfield.

Going from the keyword to the product or service…

I certainly don’t consider myself a web expert. Among laymen, I’d say I’m in the upper end of the scale in terms of understanding the internet and website strategy and e-commerce and, hopefully, search. But I do feel very confident when I say that it all (and by “it” i certainly mean website build, and, in many cases, mean the whole business concept) starts with keywords. What I mean by that is: if you can get on page one for a well searched keyword phrase, you can build your business backwards from there. Still. However, as keywords get more competitive by the minute, getting ranked is going to take more that just a good url and some tags and some copy. You have to feed the Panda, and that means a steady diet of related, original content, and as much social connection as you can generate.

Back in the day, I could have started a site like www.WhatsGoingOnTodayInNJ.com and been fairly confident that I could get front page ranking by building the page on WordPress and doing one or two posts. Now, I believe, I have to really make sure that the site talks, in an interesting way, about whats going on today in NJ. And probably get more involved in social media than I have the time to devote.

But, as a new or existing business, you can pay someone (Success Communications Group, for example), to get you to where you want to be, and still get there. My umpire blog (I umpire), for example, got over 100 hits from 40+ different keywords in the last 30 days. If I had something to sell, I thnk I would have sold one.

As you know, my day job is with Success Advertising, and one of the things I work on there is labor certification advertising for the agency. My Refinance Experience

I’ve talked a bit on the blog about a client of mine in the mortgage business here in New Jersey. I recently decided the time was right to refinance, so I made a few comparison calls. I am happy to report that Anthony Barber, of Jersey Mortgage, is a great choice for a refinance in New Jersey. My rate was a full 1/4 point better that the next lowest offer, and the closing costs were a bit less. And the experience has been a positive ove. I maintain my umpire blog (www.amateurumpire.wordpress.com) because I enjoy it – but also as a laboratory for my search consulting business. As I have previously mentioned, last year a fellow umpire told me he got a game because someone found him on Google. He is the umpire coordinator at Livingston little league and is listed on their site. When someone googled “umpire livingston”, he came up. I vowed that I would never let that happen again, and got my blog started the next day.

Results have been, I must say, great. In a pretty obscure niche, I have gotten at least 5 phone calls from people who googled a related phrase, found my site, and called me! 3 of them were people looking to become umpires, but that’s okay..they found me. One of the calls was an absolute home run – exactly the kind of call that the site was designed to generate. It was from an attorney who’s firm was hosting a tournament and they needed umpires – so the 1st place he turned was google. This is EXACTLY what I am pitching small businesses on. I didn’t get the games for some logistical reasons, but the call made my day.

An then just now I got a call from someone who is planning on having a series of informal games over the next few weeks and is looking for an umpire. Again, a great, encouraging call. Hooray for me!

Manasquan Refinance Follow Up

I wrote a couple of months ago about using individual blog posts to try to get some front page exposure for key word terms, in a case where the website itself was proving difficult to move. I am happy to report that we’re up at the top of the page for “mortgage refinance manasquan” – for the blog (www.njmortgagespecialist.com). Still can’t get the site moving, although I’m still trying – but it makes sense to focus the efforts in an area where we are having success. We’ve also gotten on page one for:

USDA loans manasquan

usda loans middlesex (and ocean and monmouth) county

and even, sometimes, “usda loans in NJ”

Note: USDA loans was one of the programs identified by the client as being valuable to him.
